Ingredients
Scale
Main Proteins:
- 14 ounces (396 grams) kielbasa sausage (sliced)
- 2 cups broccoli florets (steamed)
Grains and Liquid Base:
- 1 cup white or brown rice (uncooked)
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Seasonings and Toppings:
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup green onions (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Sauté kielbasa in olive oil over medium heat until golden brown, approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Transfer browned sausage to a separate plate.
- Use the same skillet to combine rice, chicken broth, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Bring liquid to a rapid boil, then lower heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-18 minutes until rice absorbs all liquid and becomes tender.
- Incorporate steamed broccoli and previously cooked kielbasa into the rice mixture. Fold in sour cream until ingredients are evenly distributed and creamy.
- Generously distribute shredded cheddar cheese across the top of the skillet. Cover and allow cheese to melt completely, which takes about 2-3 minutes over low heat.
- Optional: Sprinkle freshly chopped green onions over the dish for added color and mild onion flavor. Serve immediately while the skillet is hot and cheese remains gooey.
Notes
- Choose kielbasa with lower fat content for a healthier version of the dish.
- Steam broccoli separately to maintain its vibrant green color and prevent overcooking.
- Use brown rice as a nutritious alternative to white rice for added fiber and nutrients.
- Substitute dairy-free cheese and sour cream for a lactose-free or vegan adaptation of the recipe.
